There are many places to go snorkeling on the island while your here on vacation.  There are submerged historic items and plenty of fish to see and sea shells to find! Right off of Bradenton Beach around 7th street is the Regina Sugar barge.  Its was carrying molasses when it sunk during a storm in 1940.  Its located about 150 feet off the beach. It about 20 feet down, and over 200 feet long. This area is marked off by buoys. Grab a Kayak and head out to the historic Egmont Key Island!  Its about 3 miles away from the Anna Maria Island City Pier.  Ruins of Fort Dade from the Spanish American War are submerged right off the shore of the island.  Plus the island contains brick roads and a 137 year old light house.  There are grassy parts that contain fish and other sea life right off the shore. When you're walking on the beach and you see a spot marked off with stakes and twine, those are sea turtle nests! Yes, the same ones that date back to the dinosaur days. Nesting season here on Anna Maria Island is from May to October. As of September 7 th 2014 there were 257 nests, 284 false crawls, 178 hatched nests. 15,913 turtles sent to the Gulf of Mexico, according to AMITW. Female turtles lay around nine clutches (nests) in season. Which varies from 75 to 200 eggs. Incubation last about 45 to 75 days. Sea turtles mainly hatch at night. These little guys can grow to be up to 5 feet long and weight between 240- 420 pounds! They can live to be over 80 years old. They are on the United States Endangered Species List.
