Manatees on Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island is home to the endangered manatees. There are approximately 5,000 left in the world. Manatees are found in shallow, slow moving water, they feed on sea grass and fresh-water vegetation. Adult Manatees are also known as sea cows because of there massive size. They can grown to be anywhere between 10-12 feet in length and weight between 1,500 to 1,800 pounds.. With a life span of 50-60 years in the wild, they birth a calve once a year. The calves weight between 50-60 pounds and are up to four feet in length.
